You can find something to do to help you advance in your nursing career, whether it is practical courses or hands-on experience. Volunteer work is a great option if you’re looking for something to do while in school. Get your feet wet with practical experience prior to you graduate from your nursing course with a practical internship.

Volunteer to become a teaching assistant. This can be done by taking a basic nursing course and passing an exam proving that you are ready to teach others. Most employers will hire a nursing student who has a diploma or certificate of completion from a school. Some employers will even hire nursing students who have completed their master’s degree.

Get your foot in the door at a vocational/technical school. Many vocational/technical schools offer classes in the following areas: pharmaceutical nursing, adult day care, emergency medical technician, occupational therapy, nutrition, and office administrative support. If you decide to join a club or volunteer program for successful nursing students, make sure to get a bachelor’s degree from one of these schools. This will help you get a job and show potential employers that your work ethic is strong.

Join a community health care worker program. Community health care workers are nurses who work with patients who are having a difficult time living with diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or battling other health care issues. These nurses are often focused on helping individuals and their families make positive changes in the quality of their lives. If you choose to participate in a community health care worker program, get as much information as possible about what you will be doing and ask to take care of local patients while you are learning.

Don’t limit yourself to the hospital. Many nursing students decide to become registered nurses. Registered nurses, also known as RNs, work daily with doctors. You can have more flexibility and work full-time as registered nurse by enrolling in a graduate nursing program with clinical experience. You might be able find work as a nurse assistant, a nursing assistant or a technician.

As you can see, there is a large amount of choice when it comes to choosing a career after you receive your nursing student certification. There are many career options in nursing once you start your education. Nursing will allow you the opportunity to provide long-term support for others in need.
